In addition to his service to the government, the second Earl Spencer was one of the major English book collectors of the 19th century and rehabilitated the library of his ancestral home, Althorp in Northamptonshire. He was a trustee of the British Museum and a founder of the Roxburghe Club. Sixty years after his death, Earl Spencer's collections were sold and formed the basis of the John Rylands Memorial Library in Manchester.
