Biographical notes:

Karl-Wilhelm von Schlieben (b. Oct. 30, 1894, Eisenach, Germany-d. June 18, 1964), Lieutenant General in the German Army, joined the Prussian Army in 1914 and was wounded twice during the First World War. He served during World War II as commander of several Panzer and Infantry Divisions. His 709th Static Infantry Division was on the Normandy coast when the invasion took place and fought in the early days of the Battle of Normandy. In June of 1944 he and more than 800 troops surrendered to the Commander of the U.S. 9th Infantry Division following the Battle of Cherbourg.
