Clarke composed a number of marches for harpsichord and named them after contemporary noblemen. They were called "trumpet tunes" because in them the harpsichord imitates trumpet style. This march first published, attributed to "Mr. Clarke", in "A Choice Collection of Ayres for the Harpsichord or Spinett," by John Young, London, 1700. Listed as No. S125 in "Henry Purcell, 1659-1695: An Analytical Catalogue of His Music," by Franklin B. Zimmerman. The misattribution to Purcell was first made by the nineteenth-century organist William Spark on the basis of British Museum Add. MS 31465.
