Herbert McNee Hamlin came to North Carolina State University in 1962 after retiring from a distinguished career as professor and chairman of the Department of Vocational Education at the University of Illinois. His research, in the capacity of consultant to the Office of the Dean of the School of Education, was a major contribution to the Governor's Study Commission Report, Occupational Education for the Public Schools of North Carolina, in determining the educational needs of farmers throughout their farming careers, the needs of prospective farmers, and how to develop competent agriculture educators.

Born in Brookings, South Dakota, and reared on a farm in southern Minnesota, Herbert McNee Hamlin received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. Early influences during his years as an undergraduate at Iowa State led to a long and distinguished career in Vocational Education. Hamlin was a public school teacher in Iowa and a college professor at Iowa State College. He went on to the University of Illinois in 1938 where he served as professor of agriculture education, acting Dean of the College of Education, and as Chairman of the Department of Vocational Education until his retirement.

In 1962, Hamlin came to North Carolina State University as consultant attached to the Office of the Dean of the School of Education and made a major contribution to the progress of vocational education through his comprehensive position papers resulting from the intensive study of the North Carolina vocational education situation. He took a position as Professor of Economics and then Professor of Education in 1964 and was a driving force in the establishment of the Regional Center for Research, Development, and Training in Occupational Education.
