Biographical notes:
Headmaster of Black Swamp Academy at Robertville in Beaufort District [now Jasper County], S.C., during early 19th century; native of Connecticut; husband of Rebecca Verstille (b.ca.1795), a native of South Carolina; son of Eliza Verstille and brother of Peter Verstille, a merchant of Hartford and Wethersfield, Conn. and of Charlotte Lydia Sheldon Verstille (b.ca.1790); by the time of the 1850 U.S. Census [in which his name appears as Tristan Verstell and his profession is defined as "Clerk"], he and his family resided in Chatham County, Georgia.
