Biographical notes:
Jeanne Russell Janish was born in Iowa to a father who was a Presbyterian minister and a mother who was a Vassar College graduate. Janish also graduated from Vassar in 1924 with a major in Latin and went on to Stanford University where she received her Master's degree in Geology in 1926. In 1929 Janish traveled to China and worked for her cousin's rug company in Peking. There she met and married her husband, Carl Janish. They returned to the United States in 1934 where Carl worked as an engineer and they traveled extensively. In 1954 they moved to Nevada. Jeanne illustrated numerous botanical books and in 1979 a new species of beardtongue, Penstemon janishae, was named in her honor. She was awarded the New York Botanical Gardens' Distinguished Service Award in 1987. Carl passed away in the early 1990's.
