Biographical notes:

Melvin Clarke George (1849-1933) was born in Ohio and came to Oregon with his parents in 1851. He was educated at Santiam Academy and Willamette University. He was an Oregon state senator, 1876-1880, and U.S. Representative, 1880-1884 (Republican), and later practiced law in Portland.

Per note with manuscript: Melvin Clark George was a representative from Oregon, born near Caldwell, Ohio, May 13, 1849, and moved with his parents to Oregon over the Old Oregon Trail in 1851.

He was member of the State Senate from Multnomah district 1876-1880 and was elected president of the State Senate in 1878. He was a Republican Senator for the State of Oregon in the 47th and 48th Congresses (1881-1885). He was judge of the Oregon State circuit court 1897-1907. Superintended the construction of the Burnside Bridge in Portland, Oregon and was director of Portland Public Schools for 5 years.
