Biographical notes:
William H. Pray taught school in Ashford, Connecticut before settling in New York to study law in 1844. In 1849 Pray joined a joint stock venture that hoped to share the profits of a voyage to the gold fields of California. Pray, as secretary of the company, departed New London, Connecticut on board the schooner Alfred on March 11, 1849. Pray died on September 18, 1850 and was buried in Coloma, California.
