Gilbert Smith was surgeon on the United States sealing voyage (from New York), 1800-1802 (leader Edmund Fanning). The corvette Aspasia sailed from New York on 11 May 1800, visiting Brazil and Tristan da Cunha, before arriving at South Georgia. This was a very profitable sealing voyage, during which circa 57,000 fur seal pelts were secured and taken directly to China.
