Frederick August Ludwig Karl Wilhelm Genth (1820-1893) was born in Hesse, Germany, and received his doctoral degree in mineralogy from the University of Marburg in 1845. In 1848 Genth immigrated to the United States and established an analytical chemistry laboratory in Philadelphia, one of the first of its kind in the U.S. He then spent a year as superintendent of the Washington (Silver Hill) mine in North Carolina, before accepting the post of chemistry professor at the University of Pennsylvania in 1850. He was also the chief chemist and mineralogist for the second Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Over the course of his lifetime, he published 31 papers in chemistry and 215 papers on mineralogy, including the first descriptions of 24 new mineral species. Genthite and genthelvite were named in his honor. Genth died in 1893.
