General Luther S. Trowbridge was born in Oakland County, Michigan. He attended Yale University in 1857, but left college before graduation to devote himself to a legal career. He served as Colonel of the Michigan Cavalry, 1862-65, and from 1856 to 1868 resided at Knoxville, Tennessee. He came to Detroit in 1868.
