Biographical notes:

Nellie McArthur Gubler (1908-2007) was a genealogist, local historian, and community member in Southern Utah.

Nellie McArthur Gubler was born on May 8, 1908 in St. George, Utah to Moroni and Emma Jarvis Cottam McArthur, the oldest of nine children. Nellie was raised in St. George, Utah, and attended Dixie College until her graduation in 1928. In her years of high school and college, Nellie was very involved with extra-curricular activities. Following her graduation, Nellie taught school for one year in Virgin, Utah, thirty miles from St. George.

On June 12, 1929, Nellie McArthur married Emil Gubler, and moved to his home in Santa Clara, Utah, a few miles outside of St. George. Together they raised twelve children: Marion, Philip, Glen J., Venice, Evelyn, Marilyn, Keith, Earl, Ralph, Marvin, Evan, and Kenneth. At the time of her death in September 2007, Nellie and Emil were the progenitors of 68 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Nellie was devoted to preserving Southern Utah history. She compiled several volumes that documented the foundation and history of Santa Clara, St. George, and many of the local, founding families. Nellie was particularly interested in the history of Southern Utah schools and LDS church organizations, and in family history. She spent a significant amount of time gathering information and doing research in these several areas.

Nellie McArthur Gubler was deeply involved in her community. She participated in the annual Swiss Days in Santa Clara, the Dixie Roundup, and the St. George Heritage Days for many years. She was also a member of the Santa Clara chapter of Daughters of Utah Pioneers. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Nellie was involved in activities for every auxiliary branch and served in many capacities throughout her life. Nellie and Emil were also very supportive of Dixie State College, and both received Honorary Associate of Arts degrees. Nellie was afforded several other awards, both from Dixie College and other organizations, including the Orchid Lady award.

Nellie passed away on September 28, 2007 at age 99.
