Gruyter, Jan de (1859-1932). Bestuursambtenaar Nederlands-Indië tot 1889, lid van De Dageraad 1887; werkzaam in Londen voor Lever Brothers 1890-1897, onder invloed van Fabians; 1897-1909 weer voornamelijk in Indië, daarna terug in Europa; publiceerde in De Gids, De Nieuwe Gids, Onze Eeuw, De Indiër, Het Tijdschrift, The Socialist Review en schreef enige boeken; ontwikkelde zich tot religieus-socialist en was bevriend met Henriette Roland Holst.
