Stevenson, John D., 1914-1995

John D. Stevenson (b. 1914, Laramie, Wyo.-d. Nov. 3, 1995), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1937 and received his pilot wings the following year. Just before World War II began he was in command of the 22nd Pursuit Squadron in Puerto Rico. In 1942 he was transferred to England as a planning officer on General Eisenhower's staff, and later that year took part in the North African landing as a 12th Fighter Command Staff Officer. As commander of a 27th Fighter Bomber Group, he was shot down and captured by the Germans in 1943. General Stevenson was released from POW camp at the end of the War and assigned to several posts at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. During the 1950s he commanded the 49th Air Division in England, the first all-jet tactical atomic strike force; was director of plans for Tactical Air Command; and held a key position with the Central Air Defense Force (CADF) beginning in 1958. He retired in 1966.
