Beginning during World War II, North Carolina State College (later, University) began a program of coursework at Fort Bragg at Fayetteville, North Carolina. This extension program did not meet demand and it was agreed to establish a branch. In 1964, approval was given for the university to operate a four-year branch at the military base, also supporting Pope Air Force Base. The program offered soldiers and military personnel four year undergraduate degrees as well as some graduate-level courses and a masters degree in Adult and Community College Education.
After Fayetteville State Teachers College (later Fayetteville State University) became a university during the 1960s, it was decided to shift responsibility of the undergraduate program to that institution. The transfer was completed by July 1, 1973. NCSU ran a short-lived graduate program there until 1982.
