McLaughlin, Burl W. (Burl William), 1920-2007

Burl William McLaughlin (b. 1920, Maude, Oklahoma-d. March 16, 2007), U.S. Air Force officer, began his military career as an aviation cadet after graduating from college. In 1941 he received his commission and pilot wings. During World War II, he served as an instructor pilot, flight commander, and group commander at various Air Training Command bases. After a brief interval, he returned to active duty in 1947, and in the early 1950s was assigned to the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Later in the 1950s, he served in Japan as deputy director of operations at SAC HQ and then at Air Force HQ in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel. In 1966 he became commander, 322nd Air Division (Military Airlift Command) located in France, then England. In 1967 he was assigned commander, 834th Air Division in Vietnam, and in 1969 assumed duties as vice commander, 15th Air Force. General McLaughlin retired in 1971.
