Author and humorist Thomas Chandler Haliburton was a second-generation citizen of Nova Scotia. A lawyer, judge, and, after retiring to England, member of Parliament, Haliburton began his writing career with histories of Nova Scotia, which he published to correct opinions of Nova Scotia formed in the United Kingdom. He later combined his knowledge of Nova Scotia with the American comic tradition, compiling a series of rustic, vernacular tales featuring Sam Slick, the American clockmaker, one of the most popular comic figures of the century. He continued to publish comic yarns and occasional non-fiction throughout his life.
