Biographical notes:

Alfred C. Redfield taught physiology at the Harvard Medical School as an instructor from 1917-1919 and as assistant professor from 1921-1930. In 1931 he was appointed professor of physiology and he began teaching in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Redfield was director of the Biological Laboratories at Harvard from 1934-1935. He served as Chairman of the Division of Biology from 1934-1938. He was associate director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from 1942-1956 and was known for his work in oceanography. Redfield became professor of physiology emeritus in 1957. He died in 1983.

Alfred C. Redfield was one of the eight original appointees to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) scientific staff in 1930. His early work focused on the chemistry of blood circulation. Redfield's later studies at WHOI included: the circulation of the Gulf of Maine; tidal phenomena; the use of deuterium as a tracer in fresh and salt water; prevention of marine fouling; and the biology, chemistry, and physics of salt marshes.
