Biographical notes:

Andrew H. Embler began his military service in 1855 with the 71st Regiment New York Militia. Embler served with the 82nd New York Volunteers from 1861-1862, as the mustering officer of the 2nd Division, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac in 1863 and was commissioned as a captain with Company D, 59th New York Volunteers in 1864. He was discharged on 31 March 1865. Embler received the Congressional Medal of Honor on 19 October 1893 for his actions during an engagement at Boydton Plank Road, Virginia, on 27 October 1864.
