Biographical notes:
Platte D. Lyman, a son of Amasa Lyman and Eliza Partridge Lyman, was born on August 20, 1848, in a wagon on the Platte River. He was called by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help Silas S. Smith head the San Juan Mission in 1879, and essentially took over command of the expedition during Smith's prolonged absences. He also served as president of the Mormon Church's European Mission and spent several years in Europe on various mission trips. Lyman married Adelia Robinson in 1867 and a plural wife, Annie Maude Clark, in 1880. He died of cancer in Bluff, Utah, on November 13, 1901.
