The American Medical Society was founded by students in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1770 to hear lectures, stimulate discussion, and promote personal contact. It met on a weekly basis from October to February; members included established physicians as well as medical students. The American Medical Society was discontinued in Nov. 1792.
