The Plantin Press, a small private press named after the 16th century printer Christophe Plantin, was started in Los Angeles, CA, by Saul and Lillian Marks in 1931; Saul Marks, having learned the printing trade while a youth in Poland during WWI, came to the US in 1921; after marrying Lillian Simon in 1928, they moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1930 and set up shop; the Plantin Press was purposely kept a small operation so each project could receive personal attention, and as a result it earned high praise in North America and abroad for its high quality presswork; the Plantin Press printed approximately one hundred fifty-five books, pamphlets, keepsakes, etc., in addition to numerous programs, announcements, invitations, and stationery sets; Saul Marks died on Nov. 27, 1974, and Lillian continued the press until the business was sold in 1985.
