Hunter, Teola P.

Biographical notes:

A native of Detroit, Teola Hunter graduated from Cass Technical High School in 1949. Hunter continued her education at the University of Detroit where she earned a B.S. degree in education (1958). In 1971, she receive a M.A. in elementary school guidance and counseling from Wayne State University. Before entering politics, Hunter taught for the Detroit Public School System (ca. 1958-1974), and founded and operated Buttons and Bows Nurseries and Preparatory School (established c. 1971). A Democrat, Hunter was elected to the House of Representatives (1980) and was elected the first woman Speaker Pro Tempore for the House (1987).
