Biographical notes:

Mathew Blagden Hale was born in Gloucester, England in 1811 and was ordained in the Church of England in 1837. He came to Australia in 1847 with Augustus Short, Bishop of Adelaide, and was subsequently appointed the first Bishop of Western Australia in 1857. Hale was Bishop of Brisbane from 1875 until his retirement in 1885. He died in 1895.
