Dorothy O. Van Woerkom began free-lange writing in 1968. Among her awards and honors are Catholic Press Assn. Best Religious Children's Book (1974), a Junior Literary guild selection (1975), an ALA Notable Book (1977). In addition to writing juvenile books, she was a series editor for Concordia's Beginning Biblee Readers, and a contributor of periodical articles, stories and book reivews.

Dorothy O'Brien Van Woerkom was born in Buffalo New York in 1924. She work as a school teacher before beginning her career as a writer of books for children. She has created original stories and has adapted folktales from other countries.
