Biographical notes:

Bert Andrew Bandstra was born in Iowa on January 25, 1922. After graduating from high school, he enlisted as a seaman in the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he served in the Solomon Island and Okinawa campaigns, and received the Presidential Unit Citation.

He was honorably discharged in 1945 and resumed his education. He graduated from Central College at Pella, Iowa in 1950 and from the University of Michigan School of Law in 1953.

Admitted to the bar in 1953, he commenced the practice of law in Pella, Iowa. He was Marion County (Iowa) Attorney from 1955 to 1959 and assistant to Congressman Neal Smith from January 1959 to February 1964. He was elected to the 89th Congress November 3, 1964, where he served as a Democratic Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1965 to 1966.
