1776 volunteer in the grenadier company of the 55th regiment of foot, served in America; 1778 captain in the Athol Highlanders (77th foot); 1780 major, then lieutenant-colonel of the 98th foot; 1780s diplomatic missions in the East Indies; 1783 served at Cuddalore, quarter-master-general of the forces in India; 1784- ? 1788MP for Clackmannan; 1788 ambassador to China (died en route)
