D (1931), Harvard Univ.; instructor of English, Stanford Univ., 1925-27; Sheldon travelling fellow, Harvard Univ., 1931-32; from instructor to professor of English (1932-70), chairman of the dept., (1944-48), dean of the division of humanities (1947-61), and dean of the College of Letters and Science (1961-70), UCLA; in 1970 he became emeritus dean of the College of Letters and Science, and in 1971, academic asst. to the executive vice chancellor; co-author with Majl Ewing and Llewellyn M. Buell, A guide to better writing (1940); research interests in the history of prose fiction and Victorian literature.
