Springfield, Illinois tailor in business with his brothers, Van S. Bennett and John A. Bennett, all of whom came from Virginia in 1834 to settle in Springfield. William had been licensed as a preacher in Virginia and in 1849 took charge of the M.E. church in Springfield.
