Biographical notes:

John Edwards Godfrey (1809-1884) was born in Hampden, Me., the son of John (1781-1862) and Sophia Dutton Godfrey ( -1836). The Godfreys moved to Bangor, Me., in 1821. John E. Godfrey attended Washington Academy in East Machias, Me., and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1833, and practiced law in Bangor. Godfrey was Judge of Probate for Penobscot County from 1856 to 1881. He was married twice and had three children.
