Walter Bartky was intimately associated with the University of Chicago during his entire career. Born in Chicago in 1901, he received his B.S. from the University of Chicago in 1923 and his Ph.D. in 1926. He was immediately appointed instructor in astronomy and eventually became professor of astronomy. He was also professor of applied mathematics and dean of the Division of Physical Sciences. In 1955 he was appointed vice president in charge of special scientific programs. At various times during his career he was a consultant to industrial firms. He died on March 19, 1958.
