Geologist (marine geology) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Chief scientist of Deep Sea Drilling Project at Scripps, 1967-1971, and director of DSDP from 1971. First chief scientist of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 1987-1989; director of Ocean Policy Institute of the Pacific Forum in Honolulu, 1989-1995.
