Biographical notes:
The 3rd Duke of Chandos, James Brydges (1732-1789), a prominent Whig politician and courtier, married Anne Eliza (Gamon) Elletson, the daughter of Richard Gamon and widow of Roger Hope Elletson, Governor of Jamaica (1766-1767) and owner of the Hope and Middleton plantations there. The Dowager Duchess had been declared insane by 1791.

James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos (1673-1744): British statesman and patron of the arts. His son Henry inherited the dukedom and some of his father's posts. The 3rd Duke of Chandos, James Brydges (1732-1789), was a prominent Whig politician and courtier. In 1777, he married Anne Eliza (Gamon) Elletson, the daughter of Richard Gamon and widow of Roger Hope Elletson Governor of Jamaica (1766-1767). The Dowager Duchess was declared insane by 1791.
