Biographical notes:

James Murray, distinguished general and governor of Quebec, was born in Scotland. He was commissioned to British army about 1740 and served in several expeditions in the West Indies, Flanders and Brittany. Murray played a vital part in the conquest of Canada, serving as commander of the operations against Montreal which led to the final French surrrender. He was appointed governor of Quebec from 1760-1766. He also served as governor of Minorca from 1774 to 1782. He was made a full general in 1783.
