Charles G. Overberger was born in Barnesboro, PA in 1920. After graduating from Penn State University, he went on to do graduate work at the University of Illinois where he was a graduate student of Carl S. Marvel and later a Research Associate. Overberger taught for many years at Brooklyn Polytechnic, leaving in 1967 to accept a position as Chairman of the Chemistry Department at the University of Michigan where he remained until his retirement in 1989. Besides being recognized as a leading polymer chemist, Overberger was an active member of several professional organizations and held various offices in each of them, including President of the American Chemical Society and Chairman of the U.S. National Committee for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Charles G. Overberger died in 1997 after an extended illness.
