Biographical notes:

Isaac I. Stevens was born in 1818 at Andover, Massachusetts. He was a graduate of West Point and served in the Mexican War, from 1846 to 1847. Stevens was also an Indian agent for Washington Territory, chief of the Northern Pacific Railroad survey, governor of Washington Territory, from 1853 to 1857, and territorial delegate to Congress in 1857. During the Civil War, he was a major general in the Union Army, and died at Chantilly, Va. in 1862.
