Rosa Caroline Murray-Prior was born on 27 March 1851 at Bromelton on the Logan River, Queensland. She was the third child of squatter Thomas Murray-Prior and his wife, Matilda. Rosa married Arthur Campbell Bulkley Mackworth Praed in St. John's Anglican Church, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, on 29 October 1872. After an ill-fated attempt to establish a coastal station on Curtis Island, she and her husband left Queensland for England, arriving in London in April 1876.

Rosa began her writing career in her teens and continued in England, producing over 45 books over the next forty years. In the 1890s, she became estranged from her husband and separated from him in 1897, at which time she began living with companion Nancy Hayward, a psychic medium. Rosa revisited Australia once in 1894-1895, but maintained contact with relatives and friends throughout her life. Rosa died in Torquay, Devon on 10 April 1935.
