The Southern Association of Women Historians (Caucus of Women in History until 1976) was founded in 1970 at the annual meeting of the Southern Historical Association in Louisville, Ky., to study and advance the status of women at all levels of the historical profession; to oppose discrimination against women in the profession; to encourage the teaching of women's history, and to develop research in the field; and to disseminate information on research grants, fellowships, and other aids to professional advancement for women.
