Feiss, Julian W.
Biographical notes:
Julian W. Feiss (1904-1980) was a mining engineer. He was a graduate of Princeton and the Arizona School of Mines. After graduation he worked as a practical miner in Idaho. From 1929 to 1931 he was a field geologist in southern Africa. He then joined the consulting firm of Crowell & Murray and worked in Ontario, South Dakota, and Chile, among other places. In 1937 he went to work at the Climax Molybdenum Mine in Colorado. During World War II, he returned to Africa with the military intelligence services. After the war he became editor of the American Mining Congress Journal. He was assistant to the director of the Bureau of Mines from 1947 to 1951 and staff geologist with the Kennecott Copper Company until 1961. He then joined the office of the assistant secretary of the Interior for mineral resources. He was executive secretary of the Federal Metal and Nonmetal Mine Safety Advisory Committee before retiring in 1973.
