Biographical notes:

Martin N. Johnson was born in 1850 at Norway, Wisconsin. After his education he established a law practice with his brother Lewis at Decorah, Iowa. In 1883 Martin and Stella Johnson and his brother Lewis and family homesteaded near present Petersburg, N.D. He was a member of the North Dakota Constitutional Convention in 1889. From 1891 to 1899 he was U.S. Congressman from North Dakota and in 1908 was elected to the U.S. Senate. He died in office on Oct. 21, 1909.

Born at Norway, Wisc. Graduated Iowa State University, taught school in California. Married Stella White 1879. Returned to Iowa, attended law school, elected to Iowa legislature. Moved in 1883 to Petersburg, Dakota Territory (later N.D.). Elected Nelson County district attorney, delegate to North Dakota Constitutional Convention 1889. Elected to U.S. House 1890-1894, lost 1899 Senate race, elected to U.S. Senate 1908. Died in office 1909.
