Biographical notes:

Bruce Cooper Clarke (1901-1988) was born in Adams, New York. After graduating from West Point in 1925, he commissioned with the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1940 he graduated from Command and General Staff School. During World War II, he served as combat commander in the 7th and 4th Armored Divisions. He made brigadier general in November 1944. From 1945 to 1948, he was a staff officer at the headquarters of the Army Ground Forces. During the Korean War, he was commanding general of the 1st Armored Division, from 1951 to 1953, and the I Corps in 1953. After the war, his held the position of commanding general for the U.S. Army Pacific, from 1954 to 1956, the Seventh Army, from 1956 to 1958, and the Continental Army Command, from 1958 to 1960. He became Commander in Chief of the U.S. Army in Europe in 1960. He retired as a general in 1962. His awards included the Distinguished Service Cross, three Distinguished Service Medals, three Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, and three Bronze Starts.

Bruce Cooper Clarke (1901-1988) was commander of Continental Army Command from 1958-1960; of U.S. Army Europe from 1960-1962; and of U.S. Army Pacific from December 1954 to April 1956. Among his many awards are the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star, and Legion of Merit.
