Silas Peirce (1793-1879) founded a wholesale grocery house in Boston, Mass., in 1815. It retained his name under various proprietors and is known today as S. Peirce & Co. Peirce was also a successful importer of foreign fruit and dealt in wine, tea, tobacco, and oils. Prominent in the Massachusetts militia, he was also a city alderman.
