Biographical notes:

William E. Ricker was internationally recognized for his contributions to aquatic biology and fisheries science. He was born in Waterdown, Ont. in 1908 and received his formal education from the University of Toronto. W.E. Ricker was a professor of Zoology (teaching about birds and fish) at Indiana University from 1939 to 1950, then returned to Canada to work for the Fisheries Research Board as editor of publications and eventually the board's senior scientist in 1964 when he moved to Nanaimo. From 1973 until his death in 2001, he continued to work on a voluntary basis on the history of Fraser River salmon fisheries and other projects. He received an honourary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Guelph in 1996.
