Biographical notes:

John H. Ransdell was a planter of Elmwood Plantation in Alexandria, Rapides Parish, Louisiana. He and his wife, Amanda THickman, had nine children. One of their sons, Joseph E. Ransdell (1858-1954), became a United States congressman and senator.
