Walter Leland Hopkins was born in Marysville, Ohio in 1898. He attended the Oberlin Academy in 1912-13 and 1915-16. In June 1917, he enlisted in the United States Army Ambulance Service, joining the Princeton University unit, Section 523. The unit served with the French Armed Forces in the 35th Division, and saw extensive action. Hopkins worked for Tiffany Studios in New York following his military service. He died in 1930, the cause of death attributed to the effects of a gassing.
