1901 commissioned into the 7th hussars, served in South Africa; 1902-1911 served on diplomatic missions for King Edward VII; 1907 captain in the Royal Scots Greys; 1910 privy councillor; 1911-1912 councillor of state during the Delhi durbar; 1914-1916 aide-de-camp to the commander-in-chief of the British empire forces; 1917-1919 served on the western front; 1919 brevet lieutenant-colonel; 1920 honorary major-general; 1920-1923 governor-general of South Africa; 1921 colonel-in-chief of the Royal Scots Greys; 1924 chairman of Middlesex Hospital.
