Biographical notes:
The Placer Hotel was built in 1912 and designed by architects Cass Gilbert and G.H. Carsley. The Placer Hotel immediately became competition for the Montana Club, a popular meeting place of Helena's elite. At this time, women were not allowed to become members of the Montana Club, which made the Placer Hotel an appealing alternative for families. The hotel was built with strong financial support from J.M.S. Neill. It was his intent to build the largest and best hotel of the region. The Placer Hotel was the product of this endeavor . The building still stands and is considered a major landmark of downtown Helena, Montana.
