Otto Rank, an internationally known psychologist, attended the University of Vienna where he studied under Sigmund Freud. From 1912 to 1924 Rank served as the editor of two leading journals dedicated to psycho-analysis. He also served as the founding director of the International Psychoanalytic Institute, 1919-1924. Throughout this time Rank remained a loyal affiliate of Freud's. In 1926, however, Rank ideologically broke from Freud and shifted his focus from the unconscious to the conscious. He was a prolific writer and lectured internationally. His academic career included lecturing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work, 1929-1939 and at the Graduate School for Jewish Social Work in New York, 1934-1939.
