Biographical notes:
Emma Lydia Rankin (1838-1908) was the daughter of Rev. Jesse Rankin, first pastor of the Presbyterian congregation in Lenoir, N.C., and Ann Delight (Salmon) Rankin. She was a teacher and conducted a school for girls known as Kirkwood and was active in church and literary activities in Lenoir.
