Biographical notes:

The E.H. Butler family played a prominent role in the development of the Niagara Frontier for nearly one hundred years -- 1880-1976.

E.H. Butler founded the Buffalo Evening News (first edition, October 11, 1880), and upon his death in 1914, his son, Edward, assumed the responsibility of the newspaper as editor and publisher. Later, when the paper was incorporated, he became president. At his death in 1956, his widow, Kate Robinson Butler became the president of this important paper in Buffalo. Shortly after her death in 1975, the paper was sold to Blue Chips Stamps.

From its earlier years, SUCB has been indebted to the Butler family as three generations were represented as presidents of the College Council, resulting in the naming of the college library after E.H. Butler, Senior. When the college archives center was established in 1975, all Butler correspondence in connection with the College Council became an important collection.
